Success!
Friday, 30th January 2004 at 9:22AM (1665 days ago)
finally, took it's godamn time. finally my parts arrived this morning. didn't take me long to rip open all the boxes and throw all the pieces together.

i'm surprised how small the motherboard is, it's a nice size to fit inside the table. i'm yet to hook up the power or the hard drive, but i'll do that later on.

the graphics card is an ati radeon 9200 special edition with tv output. it's handy because i can test it downstairs on the tv without needing to lug the monitor around. i'll never ever ever deal with computer world again, they're absolute morons.

pretty busy at the moment with work, which is good and bad. working on some big stuff, have a meeting today with some interesting people to discuss interesting things....
pretty bummed that apple didn't release a 20th anniversary mac!

Stop the Madness

damn you apple! i'm not going to get any work done at this rate. i can't stop playing around with garageband. it has to be one of the most addictive apps i've EVER used. ever ever ever!
i'm keen to get the jam pack and maybe the keyboard too, which is nicely priced for what it is.
back to work for me.

Play That Funky Music

our copies of ilife 04 arrived today finally! wow what can i say, absolutely bloody fantastic job apple. i can't stop with garageband! it's so easy to use and you can make some very cool sounding beats with a minimal of fuss.
iphoto is much snappier, but it still shows an icon of a canon ixus v instead of my eos300d! itunes doesn't really seem any different. i'm yet to try imovie and idvd yet, but i plan on giving them a thorough checking over :)
i'm still waiting on my parts to arrive, i've been told my video card will arrive in stock today and they'll ship it out tomorrow, but i've heard that before.

We Have Power
Sunday, 18th January 2004 at 1:14PM (1677 days ago)
kurt nabbed a dual power supply for me last week and brought it around today. i decided to go with a dual power supply so that i can power both the screen and the table with a single plug. the rest of the components are set to arrive monday. excited!
i've also seen a really nice macro adaptor for my eos300d which i'm hoping to pickup next week. the actual ef macro lens is almost $800, but the ef extension tube lens which i'm trying to get a hold of is $149. bit of a difference.

Getting There
Wednesday, 14th January 2004 at 9:52AM (1681 days ago)
started back at the office this week, so i haven't had a great deal of time to post.
i went through my list of parts and ordered the rest of the computer components needed. i ordered:
intel celeron 2.4ghz cpu
gigabyte ga-8s648fx motherboard
512mb ddr ram
seagate 40gb hd
gigabyte agp 8x ati radeon 9200 tv-out
hopefully i should get the parts this week or next and then i'll be able to start building the table once i've got the computer up and running.
my main reasoning behind using pc hardware is the fact that it's cheap and can easily be mounted without a case inside the table.
the table itself will run a very slim version of linux that will autoboot into a frontend menu. you will be able to shutdown the machine via the controllers and do everything else needed.

the monitor arrived yesterday, and it's better than i expected. it's the shortest depth of all the CRT screens i've seen and has a really nice flat screen with great colour and contrast. i've got the screen hooked up to the g5 for the time being until i assemble the guts of the table.

Sonic Boom
Saturday, 3rd January 2004 at 2:22PM (1692 days ago)
after more wiring fun i got player 2 all setup and good to go, which means the control panel is ready to start giving it some decent testing. can't believe how many wires there are! it will definitely be a lot neater in the final thing, i'll also solder the contacts to the buttons and joysticks to keep everything nice and secure.

i was a bit worried about wiring up the joysticks as i wasn't sure what to wire up where. in the end it was very easy, everything needs to be wired in reverse, so down is up, etc....
player 1 is now all good to go and i did a bit of testing with street fighter champion edition. man does that bring back memories, it's like being a kid again :)
the wiring is a bit messy at the moment, but it'll be a lot neater once i'm done in the final unit, again this is just for testing purposes ;)

New Year
Thursday, 1st January 2004 at 1:15PM (1694 days ago)
happy new year! :)
decided to start playing around with the ipac today and start to wire things up. i was quite amazed how panther recognised the ipac:

i think the wiring will be the biggest pain in the bum, but i'll get there in the end :)
after some stuffing around, i got the wiring all working great. the thing i love about the ipac is that you can plug a keyboard into it via the pass-through port and configure the system. you simply open a text editor and it'll output everything in the text editor!
