Clean

Monday, 24th May 2004 at 11:23AM (1550 days ago)

We had to venture up to Nelson Bay on the weekend as Renae's grandmother passed away last week, not fun. Whilst we were up there I decided to clean my car as it's really hard to do in Sydney with all the water restrictions going on.

Spunky!

The new Asterisk codec is now in place and it's really working well. We can make multiple simultaenous calls and it only uses a very insignificant amount of bandwidth per call, somewhere around 6-8kb/sec.

Pretty :)

I haven't had a lot of time to finish fixing up the site but i'm hoping in the next week or two it should all be back to normal with comments and all :)

Mmmmmm pie

I started monitoring the PBX last week so I could get an idea of the traffic that was going through it. It's quite interesting to watch:

MRTG and RRDTool are great tools for this kind of stuff. I'll be interested to see the difference in traffic once I get the G.729 codec all going (doesn't seem to be working at the moment).

Update:
Turns out the issues with G.729 are related to the really crappy and buggy registration program by Voiceage. Digium have a new version of the codec which is 50% faster and doesn't rely on Voiceage code. So i'm waiting on a new license key to use with the beta as Asterisk refuses to start with the current codec installed. Fun!

Slowly but surely (I think?)

You'll have to excuse all the broken links in the nav bar if you've been clicking through (as i've noticed). I'm hoping to have the rest of the site fleshed out by the end of the week. I'm pretty happy with the design though.

I finally received my license key from Digium for my G.729 licenses. Go figure, I now have to send something off to someone else to actually get the license key activated.

Trying something new

Monday, 17th May 2004 at 4:34PM (1557 days ago)

So wow finally i've got around to redesigning this site. It's only taken me about a year. I've decided to move away from MovableType for this site, and it doesn't really have anything to do with the new pricing, etc, I just find MT to be clunky for my needs.

You'll have to bare with me whilst i'm slowly putting this site back together. I'm planning on adding quite a bit to the site as you can probably see from the nav. Stay tuned for more updates as I piece this all back together :)

All feedback about the new design is appreciated and if you find any weirdness: jeremy at creativebastard dot com.

Speak to me

Friday, 14th May 2004 at 10:12PM (1560 days ago)

again i've been doing some more toying with our phone system. i've found a local provider that's based in melbourne that offers iax termination for asterisk. meaning we can route all our outgoing calls through voice over ip and reap the benefits of cost savings.

i'm really amazed at the quality of the calls. nobody has been able to tell the call is via voip. i ordered a handfull of licenses for the g.729 codec which will let us pump more calls through our connection. it reduces the voice bandwidth from 64kbps down to only 8kbps, which is damn amazing!

enough of my rambling, have a fab weekend!

Roll it out

Tuesday, 11th May 2004 at 7:13AM (1563 days ago)

after much testing and whatnot i finally have our asterisk based pbx up and running. today i setup our new york based number as well, which is very cool stuff, it all goes via the internet and the call quality rivals that of a normal pstn phone call. i'm still amazed, and so is everyone who's called us on it so far.

i've been busy yet again and haven't had a lot of time to post. i'm still slowly working away at the table. it's taken me way longer than i originally thought/intended it would. i've gone through i don't know how many different os installs and hardware changes.

and i'm still currently working on the redesign, which is also going slowly. at the same time i'm going to ditch movabletype and use our own stuff. mt is a bit clunky at times, but it's definitely a great product don't get me wrong.

Ring Ring

Wednesday, 5th May 2004 at 1:11PM (1569 days ago)

after much stuffing around with customs and having to pay over $100 to get the phones out of customs they've arrived! it took about 1 minute to get the phone going on the new pbx, and i'm very impressed so far!

there's a few little issues with them which i'm working through, there's about 10 seconds of echo at the start of a call, just need to adjust my echo supression in asterisk.
